About Saint Bonaventure

Saint Bonaventure Parish in Lavallette New Jersey is an all year around worshipping community in the Roman Catholic Tradition. Our history is rich and long.  Before 1905, Catholics who lived in Lavallette attended Mass at St. Peter’s in Point Pleasant Beach and until 1918, at St. Catherine’s in Seaside Park.  During the year 1918, a group of Lavallette Catholics petitioned the Bishop to send a priest to Lavallette for the celebration of Sunday Mass.  The first mass was celebrated in Lavallette on July 6, 1919, in the Union Church of Lavallette.   On August 23, 1921, the mission of Lavallette was incorporated as the Church of St. Bonaventure.  In 1922, a parcel of land was acquired and the original church was constructed and completed by the spring of 1924.  On June 29, 1924, Father Hess celebrated the first Solemn High Mass in the church.  A parish Catholic Youth Organization hall, known as the Quonset hut, was erected and opened for extra Sunday Masses on June 29,1947.  The mission was cared for by St. Catharine’s until 1942, when Father William Brennan was appointed the first Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Seaside and given the duty of overseeing St. Bonaventure mission.

On June 15, 1950, St. Bonaventure was established as an independent parish, with Father Joseph S. Keefe as the first resident Pastor.  In 1951, a rectory was constructed.   In 1965 construction began on a large gothic church, which was dedicated on May 22, 1966.  In order to serve the growing year round community at St. Bonaventure and the many needs of the local community the old Quonset hut was replaced by a new 22,000 square foot parish center in 1998.

Presently, St. Bonaventure is a parish consisting of nearly 890 registered families. 616 families are all year round members and the remaining families are part time weekend or summer residents who participate in the life of the parish when in Lavallette.
